Florida licenses substance use disorder providers by the component of service they deliver. One organisation may hold several licences at one address — for example detoxification, residential treatment and outpatient services — and each is regulated on its own terms.
That is why a provider described as licensed may be licensed for something other than the service a particular person needs. Asking which components are licensed is a fair question to put to any provider. This page is a plain-language guide. Licences, applications and eligibility decisions are handled by the State of Florida through its own official channels.
Detoxification
Medically supervised withdrawal, residential or outpatient.
Residential treatment
Structured treatment with accommodation, at several levels of intensity.
Day or night treatment
Intensive programming without a full residential stay.
Outpatient
Scheduled individual and group treatment.
Medication-assisted treatment
Opioid treatment programmes, which carry federal requirements in addition to state licensing.
Clinical and medical standards, staff qualifications and screening, client rights and confidentiality, the physical environment, and the handling of medication and records.
Providers are inspected on a schedule and in response to complaints. Serious or repeated findings can lead to conditions on a licence, fines, or its revocation.
Licence status is public information held by the state. Anyone choosing a provider — for themselves or for a relative — can check that the licence is current and covers the service in question before committing to anything, and it is worth doing.
